Handpan for Wellbeing
Handpans have immense potential in a wide variety of therapeutic settings. Their soothing, uplifting sound and intuitive playing style offer a unique way to foster emotional expression and create a sense of calm. Since 2019 we’ve had the privilege of using handpans in a really diverse range of settings with many different people. This has included adults and children with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD); individuals living with anxiety and depression; within care home settings; joint sessions with Equine Assisted Therapy; and with children and young people in schools and Pupil Referral Units (PRUs). Lyndon spent 3 years as the Pupil Engagement Lead at a local primary school in Torquay using handpans as one of his tools to connect with children who were struggling in the classroom environment. We have also used them in hospices, providing comfort to people receiving end-of-life care and their families as well as providing regular music sessions for inmates at an NHS secure psychiatric facility, where the handpan’s therapeutic benefits have been deeply impactful.
Across all these settings, we’ve witnessed how these incredible instruments can create profound and meaningful connections, offering a space for relaxation, expression, and wellbeing.
